Background
Adolescence is a critical developmental period characterized by rapid physical, emotional, cognitive, and social changes. While this stage offers opportunities for growth and development, it is also associated with increased vulnerability to mental health disorders. Depression, anxiety, behavioral disorders, substance abuse, self-harm, and suicidal behaviors have emerged as significant public health concerns among adolescents worldwide. Mental health challenges during adolescence can adversely affect academic performance, interpersonal relationships, and long-term wellbeing.
Objective
This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of mental health challenges among adolescents, identify associated risk factors, and assess the impact of mental health conditions on educational, social, and health outcomes.
Methods
A retrospective multicenter observational study was conducted involving 5,500 adolescents aged 10–19 years from schools, community health centers, and adolescent clinics between 2018 and 2024. Demographic information, psychosocial variables, mental health assessments, academic performance indicators, and healthcare utilization data were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify predictors of mental health disorders.
Results
Mental health challenges were identified in 32.8% of adolescents. Anxiety disorders (27%), depressive symptoms (22%), behavioral disorders (16%), substance use problems (9%), and self-harm behaviors (6%) were the most common conditions. Significant risk factors included family conflict, bullying, excessive screen time, academic stress, social isolation, and adverse childhood experiences. Adolescents with mental health disorders demonstrated poorer academic outcomes and increased healthcare utilization.
Conclusion
Mental health challenges are highly prevalent among adolescents and are influenced by multiple social, psychological, and environmental factors. Early identification, school-based interventions, family support programs, and accessible mental healthcare services are essential for improving adolescent wellbeing and reducing long-term mental health burdens.
